Its main goal is to replace the Space Shuttle System when used in combination with the Orion spacecraft. The most powerful rocket NASA has ever launched, it is designed for deep space exploration by humans of the Moon, and robotic excursions to the Moon, Mars, and planets too far away for human missions. It can carry more payload into deep space than any other single rocket. The first SLS launch, called Artemis I, was an uncrewed flight meant to demonstrate the system's capabilities, taking place on November 16, 2022.
